Most installed fences cost $20 to $60 per linear foot in 2026, which works out to $3,000 to $9,000 for 150 feet. Those are national figures. In Montgomery the number for your yard depends on the material, the height, the gates, and how hard the ground is to dig on the day.
Price ranges are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026, not our own quotes. Local labor, material prices and the conditions on your lot move a job up or down inside a range. Last checked October 2026.

|---|---|

How much does a 6-foot wood privacy fence cost?
National figures put a 6-foot privacy fence at $25 to $60 per foot installed. The table gives totals by length for a typical fence at $20 to $60 per foot. A 6-foot privacy fence falls in the upper part of each row, because it uses more lumber and bigger posts than a 4-foot picket.
| Fence length | Typical installed cost |
|---|---|
| 50 feet | $1,000 to $3,000 |
| 100 feet | $2,000 to $6,000 |
| 150 feet | $3,000 to $9,000 |
| 200 feet | $4,000 to $12,000 |
What is the cheapest fence to have installed?
Chain link, which starts near $9 per foot. If you need privacy, the lowest-cost solid fence in Alabama is pressure-treated southern pine with dog-ear pickets, since the lumber is milled in this region. Keeping a large dog in the yard on a budget is a job for 5 or 6 foot chain link. Slats or a screen can be added later.
Is black aluminum cheaper than wrought iron or vinyl?
Yes for iron, about even for vinyl. Aluminum runs $25 to $75 per foot, which is cheaper than wrought iron at $50 to $85 and overlaps with vinyl at $30 to $60. In Montgomery's humidity aluminum has a second advantage: it does not rust, and termites have no interest in it.
How much extra does a gate cost?
A gate is priced as its own item, by width, material and hardware. A walk gate adds the least. A double drive gate, or any gate with an opener, adds the most. On clay soil a wide gate also needs heavier posts and a bigger footing, and that is part of the gate price. Each gate gets its own line on our estimate.
How much extra for a slope, brush or an old fence?
It depends on the yard, so we price these after seeing it. The common extras around Montgomery are tearing out and hauling off the old fence, cutting privet, vines and saplings out of an old fence row, and digging in sticky Black Belt clay or through roots. A sloped line takes more cutting and fitting than a level one.
I got three quotes and they are far apart. Which one is realistic?
Compare the written scope before the totals. Put the quotes side by side and check footage, height, lumber grade or vinyl thickness, post size, post depth, gate count, tear-out, permit and cleanup. When one bid is far under the rest, something on that list is usually missing or smaller. Bids for the same scope should be in the same neighborhood.
Does a fence add value to my home?
A sound, good-looking fence makes a house easier to sell, mostly to buyers with dogs or young children. Do not expect to get every dollar back. Whether it changes your property taxes is a question for your county revenue commissioner's office, which sets the appraisal.
