Fence Questions and Answers for Montgomery Homeowners

Quick answers to questions we get on the phone. Prices, permits, repairs and neighbor issues each have a longer guide, linked at the bottom of this page.

How deep should fence posts be set?

Deep enough to hold against wind and sit below the soil that moves. Frost is not the issue in central Alabama. A common rule is to bury about a third of the post, and to go deeper for 6-foot privacy fence, gate posts and Black Belt clay. Your city's code or the fence maker's instructions may set a minimum, and we follow whichever is greater.

Should posts be set in concrete, gravel or foam?

Concrete for gate posts, corners and any solid fence that catches wind. Gravel at the bottom of the hole helps water drain away from a wood post, which matters in clay that holds water. Foam sets fast, but we do not trust it for gates or tall privacy fence in storm country.

How long should I wait before staining a new wood fence?

Wait until the wood has dried. Treated pine comes off the truck wet. In Montgomery's humidity it can take several weeks to a couple of months, less in a dry, hot spell. Test it by flicking water on a picket. If the water soaks in, stain it. If it beads up, give it more time.

How much does it cost to stain or seal a fence?

It is priced by the fence's length and height and by how much cleaning the wood needs first. Mildew has to be washed off before sealer goes on. Ask for it as its own line on the fence estimate.

Can I use deck screws to fix loose pickets?

Yes, as long as the deck screws are coated for treated lumber or are stainless steel. Plain steel rusts quickly in this humidity and leaves streaks. Use stainless on cedar to avoid black stains around each screw.

Can a faded vinyl fence be painted?

Yes, with paint made for vinyl, but it will need repainting, and a dark color soaks up Alabama sun and can warp a panel. Try washing it first. Much of what looks like fading here is mildew and green algae.

I want a double gate for an RV or trailer but my posts are weak. Reinforce or rebuild?

Rebuild the gate posts. A double gate wide enough for an RV or trailer hangs a lot of weight on two posts, and ordinary line posts will not carry it, least of all in clay. We set larger posts in deep concrete footings and rebuild the panel on each side so everything lines up.

Does a new fence raise my property taxes?

Ask your county revenue commissioner's office, which appraises property for property taxes in Alabama. Next to the house and the land, a fence is a small item.
