Photograph the damage and what caused it, then call your insurer and a fence company before anything is moved. Central Alabama gets severe thunderstorms and tornadoes in spring and again in late fall, plus wind and rain from tropical systems off the Gulf, so this is a common call for us.
Half my fence blew down. Who can fix it fast and what will it cost?
Call us with the length that is down and a few photos. A section on the ground with snapped posts is a major repair, $900 to $2,500 by national 2026 figures. After a tornado or a wide line of storms, every fence company in the River Region fills up within days. Calling early gets you an earlier slot.
My dogs are in the yard and the fence is open to the road. What can be done right away?
Ask for a temporary closure on the first visit. We brace the posts that are still standing and close the opening with a temporary panel until the full repair. Tell us when you call that dogs are in the yard or that there is a pool, because those jobs move to the front of the line.
Is there an extra charge for emergency or weekend fence repair?
Often, yes. Many fence companies charge more for after-hours work and some do not offer it. Ask when you call. The cheaper path is usually a quick temporary closure now and the permanent repair on a regular working day.
Does homeowners insurance cover a fence knocked down by a storm or a tree?
Many policies do, under coverage for other structures on the property. Whether yours pays depends on the policy, the deductible and the cause. Some Alabama policies carry a separate wind or named-storm deductible. A small repair can cost less than the deductible. Only your insurer or agent can tell you. We write an itemized estimate you can send them.
My neighbor's tree fell on my fence. Whose insurance pays?
Usually your own. Damage to your fence is normally claimed on your policy even when the tree grew next door. The answer can change if the neighbor had been warned the tree was dead or dangerous. Ask your insurer how they treat it. We can rebuild only the crushed sections when matching material is still sold.
The insurer offered much less than the repair quote because the fence is old. Now what?
Ask the adjuster to show the math in writing. Many policies pay an old fence at its depreciated value, not the price of a new one. Send an itemized estimate and photos. If the gap does not close, repairing only the damaged sections and leaving the sound ones is often the workable answer.
The storm knocked the fence down and my neighbor says it is mine. Who pays?
It depends on where the fence stands and whether you both use it. The Code of Alabama says partition fences between improved lands are to be erected and repaired at the joint expense of the occupants (section 35-7-3). A fence wholly on one lot belongs to that owner. A fence company cannot tell you where the line is. A licensed land surveyor can. See our page on shared fences in Alabama.
